Cumbria and Northumbria

A great sweep of mountains and hills across the very north of England. The magnificent scenery of the Lake District National Park is famous for its rugged mountains and long twinkling lakes, some remote and tranquil, others offering steam-boat cruises and watersports. Pony trekking and fell walking through the valleys and along mountain ridges is another popular attraction. The area is also noted for its many world famous hotels and restaurants.

To the west the mountains slope down to the Cumbrian coast which stretches from the Solway Firth to Grange-over-Sands, a wonderful area of fine beaches and attractive ports.

East of the Lake District, the high country continues through the Northern Pennines and to the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland. A land of legend and magic, divided from Scotland by Hadrian's Wall, the Northern Frontier of the Roman Empire and built in AD 122. Gentle mellow valleys to the south and east give way to the wild open hills in the north and west.
